A tweet. A blog post. A YouTube video. A comment on someone else’s work.

Each one is a tiny property you build on digital land.

The internet runs on attention.

Every time someone reads your words, watches your video, or pauses on your photo, you capture a slice of their most limited resource. You live in their head. Seconds, maybe minutes. If your work is good, you stay longer.

Unlike the physical kind, you can build digital real estate for free.

A single post costs nothing but time. A hosted blog costs $5 a month. A YouTube channel costs nothing but the camera in your pocket. The barrier to entry is zero.

What you post attracts your tribe.

Every post is a signal. It says:

“This is what I care about. This is how I think.”

The people who resonate will find you.

It works while you rest.

Real estate generates rent.

Digital real estate generates attention, trust, and opportunity without your ongoing effort.

The essay you wrote once can change a stranger’s mind years later. A book written centuries ago can change the course of your life today. What you publish now could reach someone decades from now, long after you’ve moved on.

Physical buildings degrade over time.

But your blog post from 2019 can still bring you clients today. A YouTube video made years ago can go viral again in 2026.

Your worst work becomes your best work’s foundation.

The best time to start publishing online was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

The cost of entry is zero, and the returns can compound forever.

The studio executive decided if your story would see the light of day.
The editor decided if your words reached readers.
The record executive decided if your music existed at all.

For most of history, you needed permission to participate.

Then came the internet.

You could upload your music without a label. Publish your book without a publisher. Broadcast your thoughts without a network. The side door swung open. For twenty years, you could walk through.

That door now has a (new) lock.

When you apply for a job, a resume-scanning AI decides if a human ever sees your name. When you seek a visa, an algorithm scores your application before a consular officer glances at it. When you submit a paper, a detection system judges your originality. When you request funding, a model estimates your likelihood of success.

You used to need a human’s blessing. Now you need a machine’s.

Gatekeepers have always existed. But AI gates faster, cheaper, and at scale. It never sleeps. It holds no sympathy. It cannot be charmed, persuaded, or convinced with a story.

The human gatekeeper could be circumvented. The side door worked because a person might look up from their stack, see something in you, and open the latch. AI has no peripheral vision (yet). It sees only what it was trained to see.

There is freedom in this. The old gatekeepers were biased, slow, and inconsistent. AI offers speed and, ideally, fairness. If you match the criteria, you pass. No politics. No favoritism.

But there is also loss.

The side door that the internet opened is now being rebuilt with an algorithmic lock. Those who learn to pick it will pass. Those who don’t will knock on a door that doesn’t answer.

The question is not whether you can get in.

The question is whether you can write for the machine that decides if you deserve the chance to be seen by a human*.

*Unless you have a direct relationship, that isn’t filtered by the algorithm, like Substack

An anxious mind cannot think boldly.

A scattered mind cannot think deeply.

Your mental state is a multiplier between zero and one.

Output = Mental State × Work × Leverage

You can have the best strategy. The sharpest tools. Ten hours of focused effort. But run it through a mind operating at 0.5, and you get half of what was possible.

I often put off meditating because it seems like time wasted. But every time I sit for even 15 mins, it always helps in clearing the mind.

Athletes understand this. Musicians understand this. They rest fiercely. They know: the instrument must be tuned before it can be played.

Your environment shapes your mental state more than your willpower can resist.

Where you live. Who you work with. What you read. Who appears in your feed. These are not neutral inputs. They either pull you toward clarity or drag you into noise. Choose them like you’re choosing the air you’ll breathe for the next decade.

There are basics that work for nearly everyone: waking up rested (not just early), exercise, stillness, morning light. But these are not the insight.

The insight is simpler.

When the mind is clear, hard things become possible.
When it is not, even easy things become hard.

Your mental state is a multiplier of everything you do.

A project done in-house: $1 million. The same project done by consultants: $200,000.

Now, with AI, done in-house for $10,000. The executive sharing this seemed to imply that specialized consultants would become obsolete.

He left out one thing: the consultants have AI too.

What once cost $200,000 now costs $2,000. AI makes things faster and cheaper for you.

But for everyone else too.

The sword you just picked up? Everyone else is holding the same one.

”Let your ambitions be delusionally optimistic and your preparations realistically pessimistic.”

The above is just a convoluted way of saying -

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

One of my tweets on delusional optimism got some numbers on X, and over half the comments were pessimistic. The fact that we live in a world where we can believe that the future will be MUCH better than the past is a rare historical anomaly.

For most of human history, nothing really happened in terms of progress and social mobility was non-existent. We come from a long line of pessimists that helped us survive all the dangers.

But all the progress we’ve made in the past 2 centuries came from the delusional optimism of a few pioneers and all the others supporting them. To thrive in the 21st century, delusional optimism is the way to go.
